“The key event of the year at the construction site of Kursk NPP-2 is the beginning of foundation plate reinforcement at the power unit No 1 building”, the General Director of Rosenergoatom Concern

The key event of 2017 at the construction site of the Kursk NPP-2 replacement plant* is the beginning of foundation plate reinforcement at the nuclear unit building of power unit No 1. This was stated by the Head of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC Andrey Petrov during his working trip to Kursk NPP (Kurchatov) – 8 February, 2017.

“This year we have allocated about 17 billion rubles for the construction of Kursk NPP-2”, Andrey Petrov said. “Today, a lot of attention is paid to the organization of work, the participation of subcontracting companies. A significant well-coordinated work is required from each entity.”

Andrey Petrov visited the construction site of the replacement plant and had a production meeting on the progress of the construction of one of the priority Rosenergoatom projects.

In 2016 about 1.3 million cubic meters of soil were developed here. And the amount of soil development in the current year is no less than the last year. Together with sand and sand-gravel bed arrangement into the first power unit foundation pit this will allow to start the foundation plate reinforcement of the nuclear unit building much faster.

It is planned to prepare a production infrastructure in due time; it includes such construction base facilities as reinforced metal block manufacturing workshop, blasting workshop, pre-assembly open area, the site for concrete work and formwork, water intake structures with water lines to the construction base, etc.

“In order to provide transportation of millions of cubic meters of sand mixture to the foundation pit area we need a road network, including roads for haulers. These roads are at the high level of readiness at the moment”, the General Director of Rosenergoatom Concern said.

Between 2014 and 2016 at the site and the surrounding area 30 kilometers of roads were built, rebuilt, and reinforced. And the most important works on roads arrangement were executed last year.

An important part of Andrey Petrov’s working trip was his meeting with the Governor of the Kursk Oblast Alexandr Mikhailov, where they discussed a wide range of specific issues on cooperation between the regional administration and the Concern.

“We always participate in the construction activities at the Kursk NPP-2”, the Governor of the Kursk Oblast Alexandr Mikhailov emphasized.

He informed us that during the meeting they reached an agreement to interact at the level of the Oblast and the Concern leaders on the issues of Kursk NPP-2 construction more often this year. “In order to keep the control more strict”, Mikhailov explained. “The object is so serious that it requires this level of control.”

The Kursk NPP-2 is a replacement station for the currently operating Kursk nuclear power plant’s power blocks taken out of service. Pursuant to The Russian Federation energy land-use planning scheme valid until 2030 and approved by the Government of the Russian Federation in November 2013, the four NPP-2 replacement power blocks operating a new-generation VVER reactor will be located in the Kursk Region. The operational launch of the first two NPP-2 power blocks is planned to be synchronized with the running nuclear power stations’ power blocks taken out of service. The OJSC Concern Rosatom is the building owner and the technical customer for the project. JSC "NIAEP" acts as the general designer and the general contractor.
