“The Smolensk NPP-2 will be put into service by the time the 1st power block of the operating NPP is shut down”, says Andrey Petrov, the Rosenergoatom CEO

“The Smolensk NPP is the best one in Russia, a leading company in terms of implementing the Rosatom production system, so there is no wonder we impose special requirements on our staff”, said Andrey Petrov, the Rosenergoatom Concern CEO, during his working visit to the plant.

“One of the main goals of the Smolensk NPP in 2016 is to complete the preparatory activities related to the substitution capabilities construction program project”, said the Rosenergoatom CEO. “The deadlines set in the roadmap have been changed due to the fact that both the first and the second power blocks have confirmed their availability to extend their operations for another 15 years. Next year, we will update the third power block. By the time the first operating power block is being shut down, we will be ready to finalize the construction of the second-priority first power block and to launch it operational”.

“The Concern makes it way towards operational efficiency, new power blocks’ construction as a part of the investment programs, new business development to stay an integrated vendor both in the country and all over the world in terms of addressing power supply-related issues”, he stressed.

According to Mr. Petrov, the Smolensk NPP moves steadily to the Rosenergoatom Concern’s strategic development both in terms of delivering the required amount of electric power, cutting its net cost, and increasing labour productivity. The team shows great technical, economic, and production performance, progresses through the 2016 plan of transformation into a Rosatom Production System company, and implements the project for cobalt-60 production, which is a very popular product not related to power generation.

The Smolensk NPP-2 is planned to be made up of two power blocks with improved V-510-type 3+ generation reactor units. The VVER-TOI project is a huge step forward in water-cooled reactors’ advancement. It complies with the strictest standards and the IAEA recommendations, boasts top-notch security, can operate under a wide range of extreme man-caused loads and even in earthquake zones, and excels its foreign counterparts at many aspects.

The Smolensk nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The SNPP annually issues on the average about 20 billion kilowatts hours of the electric power into country power supply system, that constitutes about 13% of the energy, developed in «Rosenergoatom Concern», and more than 80% of the Smolensk region energy, developed by the power entities.
