Young Specialists of Leningrad NPP Take Part in Environmental Forum in Chernobyl

The VII International Environmental Forum was held from 25th to 27th of April in Slavutych (Ukraine). The Forum gathered delegates from Ukraine, Russia, Sweden, Brazil, Spain, Great Britain and Finland.

The Russian delegation included representatives of the Youth Branch of the Nuclear Society of Russia – the workers of various enterprises of the nuclear industry and energy production from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sergiev Posad, Balakovo, Kurchatov, Sosnovy Bor, Zelenogorsk, Elektrostal, Nizhny Novgorod and Obninsk.

Leningrad NPP was represented by Pavel Gredasov (STU-2), Maksim Khomyakov (EC) and Artem Sharov (OPPR).

During the Forum, the specialists of Chernobyl NPP presented their reports to the participants. The subjects of reports dealt with the processes of Chernobyl NPP decommissioning, construction of ISFSI-2 (Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation), and construction of a new safe confinement for the 4th unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

In addition, the liquidators of the Chernobyl NPP Accident, which had worked at the plant on the tragedy day, spoke before the Forum participants. They described in details the delicacy of the rescue works at that time.

“The consequences of the Chernobyl NPP disaster have no boundaries and no nationality,” told Pavel Gredasov, a Head of the Leningrad NPP delegation and Chief Engineer of reactor control. “Carrying out these forums for young people educates not only paying respect to people, which participated in the liquidation of the Accident, but also makes realize what might bring to such tragic events and not let them happen nowadays.”

At the end of the Forum, there has been held a “round table” dedicated to the discussion of the tragic events 26 years ago. The Mayor of Slavutych, a Doctor of Science, Economics, laureate of State Prize of Ukraine after V.P. Udovichenko in science and technology, participated in its meeting.

Besides, the Forum participants within a technical tour visited Chernobyl NPP, Pripyat city, and the Slavutych city museum as well, and took part in a solemn and mourning ceremony of laying flowers at the memorial to the died liquidators of the Chernobyl NPP Accident.

The ceremony was held on the night from the 25th to 26th of April in Slavutych at 12.23 am by local time (at 01.23 am by Moscow time). Those times at the central square of the city, there have been more than 2000 people, which have come to pay the tribute to the memory of the deceased Chernobyl citizens. More than 300 school students, which have taken part in the statutory mourning, holding the light in their hands, have formed a “live” corridor, through which everyone could pass and lay flowers at the memorial.
