WANO Finishes its Technical Support Mission at Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant

WANO technical support mission, held from May 14 to 18 at Balakovo NPP, was dedicated to the subject of “Linear Monitoring of Security Status of Nuclear Power Plants”.

Participants of the mission were experts of Moscow, Atlanta (USA) and Paris Centres of WANO, specialists in the field of nuclear safety from Slovakia and Ukraine (Rivne NPP and NAEK Energoatom (National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine), representatives of the Central Office of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC and the Russian nuclear power plants.

The passed mission has become one of the measures to implement recommendations given by WANO according to the results of the corporate peer review, which had been carried out at Rosenergoatom Concern in 2011. Improving the linear monitoring of security status of NPPs was then included into the minutes of the mission as an area for improvement.

Using the knowledge and experience of each other, as well as results of joint discussions, the participants of the technical support mission determined the ways for further development of technologies to monitor the status of nuclear security of nuclear power plants.

As a result of fruitful four-day work, the mission succeeded in making specific recommendations for improvement in this area, in particular, about the form of the information on the NPP status to be presented to the pant’s management, which would let making effective managerial decisions in linear monitoring.

As Deputy Director of the Department for Security Monitoring and Production of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC Oleg Zhirkov noted, Balakovo NPP had been chosen as one of the best plants for carrying out the mission, experience in linear monitoring of which could be a positive example for their colleagues.
