The experts of the Moscow regional centre of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) have finished their work at Kalinin NPP.

From April 14 to 20 the independent specialists of Zaporizhia, Khmelnitskiy, Baltic, South Ukraine, Rostov and Kola NPPs have been locating at Kalinin NPP in the re-peer review.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the implementation of the corrective actions, suggested by the WANO experts according to the results of the peer review-2010.

During the week, the work at Kalinin NPP has been studied in 24 areas of the production activity that required improvement. They included such areas as organizational and administrative management, operation, engineering support, repair, radiation protection and training of the staff. The specialists have been monitoring the performance of works at the nuclear power plant, analyzing the documentation and interviewing the staff. In the course of the studying of the corrective measures implementing, the experts also identified 6 samples of good utility practices in such areas as repair, radiation protection, chemical technology, staff training, as well as the staff and public awareness.

At the final briefing on April 20, the Head of the experts’ team Viktor Livinskiy told, “The big work is done. All the issues worked out by the plant are fruitful. It is only required to supervise their implementation and maintain the progress rate for the measures realization at the same high level.”

He thanked the team of Kalinin NPP for the cooperation, and noted that they have become not only the colleagues, but friends as well. In his turn, the Director of Kalinin NPP Mikhail Kanyshev expressed thanks to the experts for their work and a hope that all the put tasks have been achieved.

Peer reviews – one of the long-term WANO programs. It is based on the principle of voluntarism, in other words, they are held on the initiative of the host side. The result of the review is a confidential report, which reflects the strengths of the nuclear power plant’s operation and the areas of industrial activity requiring improvements. The report is transmitted only to the inspected plant and operating organization, which includes the nuclear power plant.

WANO is a non-profit organization that is not a supervising body. The association was founded in 1989. According to the reactor types, its members are included into four regional centers – Atlanta, Paris, Moscow and Tokyo. The association activity is aimed at implementing the main goal - to maximize the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants by exchanging the information, facilitating networking among the members of WANO, comparing the results of their work, as well as introducing the best practices.

Kalinin NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The Plant is situated on the north of the Tver Region in Udomelsk district. Kalinin NPP includes four power units with pressurized water reactors (VVER-1000) each one having a capacity of 1000 MW. Implementation of a multistage program of the energy start-up continues its realization on the 4th power unit, which start-up took place on November2011.
