The system of occupational safety and health management of Rostov NPP will be certified according to international standards

Auditors of the “Russian Register” association and experts of Klin Institute of Protection of Labor and Work Conditions held a diagnostic (assessment) audit of Rostov NPP system of occupational safety and personnel health management for compliance with the OHSAS 18001:2007 international standard.

The international standard requires constant evaluation of potential risks in every workplace as well as development of a plan for their systematic elimination. The continuity of this process is the key difference and innovation of the occupational safety activity, introduced by the management system, developed and certified in accordance with the requirements of OHSAS 18001:2007.

The auditors interviewed the personnel, gathered objective information and analyzed the documentation. The overall auditors’ impression - the approach of the nuclear power plant personnel to the problem is positive.

When speaking about the aims of the visit to the plant, Chief Expert of the Department of Management System Certification of the “Russian Register” association Yury Polyakov said: “The effectiveness of any enterprise largely depends on account of risks and minimization of the associated losses, including financial ones. The level of existing risks can be reduced through effective implementation of objectives in the field of occupational safety and health. The OHSAS 18001 international standard is an internationally recognized tool for the realization of this objective”.

In 2011 the nuclear power plant is planning to pass the direct certification of the system of occupational safety and health management in accordance with the requirements of OHSAS 18001:2007.

In accordance with the requirements of Russian Federation Laws, Rostov nuclear power plant has a security certificate, verifying that the works on labor protection meet the set state requirements for labor protection.

Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The nuclear power plant is located on the bank of the Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13.5 km far from Volgodonsk city. The plant operates two power units with VVER-1000 reactors with installed capacity of 1,000 MW. Power unit No.1 was put into commercial operation in 2001, power unit No. 2 – in December of 2010. Power units Nos. 3 and 4 are being constructed since 2009.
