The specialists of ??? Leningrad NPP and the ?ead of the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Intergovernmental Organization for Economic Cooperation discussed prospects for joint work

The Director General of the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development William Megvud visited the Leningrad NPP and the construction site of the Leningrad NPP-2, where he discussed s joint work prospects with Russian colleague.

The nuclear power plant was the final point of the extensive visit program for W. Megvud in Russia, during which the head of the NEA met with top officials of the Russian government and the leadership of the State Corporation "Rosatom" and then went to the current production - "the flagship of the nuclear energy" - the Leningrad nuclear power plant.

The main purpose of the visit of the Nuclear Agency is to explore ways to expand cooperation of the NEA with Russia. The Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development is an intergovernmental organization of industrialized countries, and Russia, of course, is one of the countries with the most advanced program for development of nuclear energy, said Mr. Megvud.

The Leningrad NPP was the first Russian nuclear power plant, which was visited by the Head of the NEA. The choice was not accidental. "It is a unique large-scale nuclear power plant with RBMK reactors. It is very different from what I've seen before. To me it is important to understand how the station works. This is an opportunity to gain experience and to discuss areas of joint work, as well as to find out, what activities are implemented to improve the safety at the Leningrad NPP after the Fukushima events", - said the General Director of the Nuclear Energy Agency.

William Megvud met with the leadership of the NPP at the Leningrad NPP, visited existing power units, control panel, reactor and turbine halls and storage of spent nuclear fuel and then visited the construction site of capacity replacement Leningrad NPP-2.

The OECD brings together 34 member countries. The goal of the NEA is to assist Members in the development of scientific, technological and legal bases for safe, environmentally friendly and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes through international cooperation. The NEA provides authoritative assessment forms and common views on the key issues to be used as a starting material for government decisions on nuclear energy policy and to deepen the political analysis of the OECD in the field of energy. The European Commission (EC) takes part in the work of the NEA.

The Leningrad nuclear power plant is the JSC "Rosenergoatom Concern" branch. The station is located in the city Sosnovy Bor in 80 km to the west of St. Petersburg on the bank of the Finland Gulf. The Leningrad NPP is the country's first station with RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium - graphite nuclear reactors of channel type on thermal neutrons). 4 power units with electric capacity of 1000 MWt each operate at the nuclear power plant.
