The sanitary inspection specialists from the Republic of Belarus have praised the way nuclear control is organized at the Balakovo NPP

The representatives of the Belarusian Ministry of Healthcare have visited the Balakovo NPP to study its best practices in public sanitation and epidemic control, radiation monitoring of the environment, and radiation control. The thing is, the first Belarusian nuclear power plant is planned to be launched in 2018, so there is no wonder the topic is of interest.

The Belarusian visitors were accompanied by their colleagues from the Russian Federal Medical & Biological Agency, the Rosenergoatom headquarters, and OJSC VNIIAES. On the very first day, there was a roundtable dedicated to the two countries’ legal requirements towards radiation security, operational and practical aspects of sanitary control, the radiation security status at the Russian NPPs in general and at the Balakovo NPP in particular.

Furthermore, the delegation has paid a visit to the machine hall and the main control room of the power block No. 4, reviewed the NPP working site to study the radiation control facilities in more details, and learned the way the external radiation security control laboratory operates.

“We were highly impressed by the Balakovo NPP”, said Elena Nikolaenko, the head of the radiation control laboratory at the Scientific practical center of hygiene under the auspices of the Belarusian Ministry of Healthcare. “Everything operates perfectly, and we could see that every person involved knows one’s areas of responsibilities. We have ensured that the radiation control is taken care of. The NPP boasts seasoned hands-on specialists who undergo constant training, with more experienced ones sharing their knowledge with the younger generations. To my mind, that’s an important part of the equation, because security is not just about the equipment, it’s about people in the first instance”.
