The representatives of the WANO have paid a reference visit to the Kalinin NPP

On November 16, 2016, the director of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Parisian office, Ingemar Engquist, has paid a reference visit to the Kalinin NPP. He was accompanied by Vasiliy Aksenov, the head of the WANO Moscow office.

When talking about the goal of their visit, Mr. Engquist noted: “I was appointed the director of the WANO Parisian office this July, and I believe it is very important to establish personal contacts in the industry. This is my first visit to a Russian nuclear power plant”.


Victor Ignatov, the Kalinin NPP director, welcomes the guests and told about the way the NPP operates, their preliminary plan of joint actions in 2017, noting that the Kalinin NPP is actively involved in the WANO activities ever since the very inception of the Association. For example, a joint partnership verification and a technical support mission are planned for 2017. “We do understand that the main goal of the WANO is to promote security and reliability of the nuclear power plants all over the world”, Victor Ignatov said. He also stressed that one of the NPP management tenets is making the staff adhere to the safety culture. During the working visit, the parties have agreed that safety covers both technical and personal aspects, with the latter related to security culture and information exchange. The role of a manager or a leader bearing personal responsibility for overall safety facilitation is impossible to overestimate.

Vasiliy Aksenov, the WANO Moscow office director, has invited Victor Ignatov, the Kalinin NPP director, and Alexander Dorofeev, the NPP’s chief engineer, to discuss the cooperation plans in a more thorough ways in Moscow. “Our mutually beneficial cooperation will continue to move forward, and I’d like to reassure that you can count on the WANO Moscow office in any aspects related to our joint activities”, Mr. Aksenov said.

The reference visit has also covered a technical tour of the Kalinin NPP industrial site and a visit to the Public Information Center, along with a general tour over the nuclear power experts’ city and sightseeing.

At the end of the visit, Mr. Engquist thanked the host for the warm reception and shared his impressions: “I live in Paris, and we don’t have that much snow as you have in Russia or as they have in Sweden, my homeland. That’s why I was happy to see streets covered with snow”.


The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
