The participants of the 11th International nuclear forum have paid a visit to the Leningrad NPP under construction

A delegation of the International nuclear forum dedicated to nuclear technologies safety organized by the Rosatom State Corporation and the Saint Petersburg affiliate of the NOU DPO Rosatom Central Advanced Training Institute has paid a visit to the Leningrad NPP’s substitution capabilities construction site.

Within this topic, the participants have both discussed the issues of developing a legal basis for managing the safety culture at nuclear power facilities and took part in a technical tour over the Leningrad NPP construction site.

“The forum has been operating for eleven years, and each time we dedicate it to a specific topic”, said Marina Labyntseva, the deputy director of the DPO Rosatom Central Advanced Training Institute’s international staff training department. “At the moment, we are discussing the aspect of the safety culture at the nuclear power facilities, so we invited the guests to one of the major construction sites in the Leningrad region. We believe that the NPP is the very special place that never sleeps, the place worth visiting. Besides, for many forum participants VVER-reactor power blocks is the nearest future”.

During the technical tour, the guests have learned about major steps in constructing the first power block of the Leningrad NPP and the technological and construction peculiarities of VVER reactors that will substitute the RBMK reactors that are being shut down.

“We also plan to build a nuclear power plant based on the VVER-1200 project”, said Androsh Sabo, the representative of the Paksh NPP (Hungary). “I guess 2030 is when the life span of the Paksh NPP four power block expires. I work at this NPP as an expert responsible for the nuclear area. I accepted both invitations with pleasure. I have visited the forum where I have learned a lot about the safety culture and then went to the Leningrad NPP. Our company will be involved in Paksh NPP-2 construction, so I’m interested in any information on the project used for the new Leningrad NPP and the two Hungarian power blocks construction”.

The full-scale simulator of the operating Leningrad NPP was another facility visited by the participants of the international nuclear forum. The guests have familiarized themselves with the specialties of the training center and could witness the way operational staff studies the response protocol in different working patterns of the power block.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
