The experts from Russia and Japan have discussed the aspects of removing nuclear power units from operation at the Leningrad NPP

With a view to establishing a mutually beneficial partnership in the realm of removing nuclear power units (NPU) from operation between the Rosatom State Corporation and the Japanese Toshiba Corporation, a reference visit to the Leningrad NPP was organized for Tadasu Yotsuyangi, a senior manager at the Toshiba Corporation.

The employees of Rusatom Overseas, the Rosatom’s agent company involved in promoting its business all over the world, took part in the meeting, too. Wolfgang Dipenbroek and Hans-Dieter Andreas Weihard have experience working at the German engineering company called Nukem Technologies GmbH. The latter partnered with the Leningrad to develop a powerful modern set for radioactive waste recycling and storage.

The guests have paid a visit to the main control room, the machine hall, and the central hall of the Leningrad NPP’s first order. Vladimir Pereguda, the director of the NPP, and the specialists involved in shutting the RBMK (uranium-graphite channel type reactors) power blocks, told the visitors about the active stage of preparing the 1st power block for a proper shutdown, which is scheduled for late 2018.

“Prior to the final shutdown, we have to carry out a due diligence of the power block’s technical condition to rationalize the remaining lifetime and to extend the lifespan of all elements and equipment that will be operational when running the power block without any generation. These are the activities we are currently focused on. The due diligence report is a key document in the process of elaborating the power block’s shutdown plan”, Vladimir Pereguda said.

“During the negotiations, we took interest in the way our French counterparts handle the reactor graphite provided by our German colleagues from Rusatom Overseas. We can see possibilities in working together in this area, and we would like to explore the experience of our Eastern partners”, Alexey Kuznetsov, the head of the Leningrad NPP shutdown, noted.

Natalia Safronova, the head of the Rosenergoatom Concern’s shutdown department, Ivan Syreyshikov, the executive director of FSUE RosRAO, and specialists of the Rosenergoatom Concern’s affiliate companies “The pilot and demonstration engineering center” and AO “Tekhsnabexport” were among other Russian delegates.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
