The equipment cooling system lines’ ablution at the Leningrad NPP 1st power block’s nuclear island has been completed

The pipelines connecting the suction chambers of the nuclear island’s technological equipment cooling system and the spray pond of the Leningrad NPP 1st power block under construction have been fully abluted.

This procedure was held to verify the capability and the status of how well the pipes have been cleaned of solid particles, such as sand, cinder, and rust. At the preliminary stage, the suction chambers were filled with water. When the pipe latches were open, the water started moving into the spray pond due to the static pressure, thus cleaning the pipelines.

At the moment, the water has been fully pumped out of the spray pond, and the contracting company is to clean it of any particles shortly. At the next stage, the pond will be filled with water to the final grade of +1,00 meters. Totally, around 34 thousand cubic meters of water will be pumped in.

According to Nikolay Rusakov, the deputy head of the support system workshop at the Leningrad NPP, that is the way the spray pond is being prepared for ablution of the cooling water and the heat removal systems designed for the reactor unit equipment, the reactor systems’ support set, and the NPP security systems.

“With that in mind, we have installed all thermal and mechanical equipment and are now working on connecting the power feed cables and the measuring channels. At the final stage, we will rotate the pump’s motor drives idle, align them, and get them to work”, he summarized.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
