The WANO representatives have paid an exchange visit to the Balakovo NPP

On May 30 – June 2, 2016, the representatives of the Moscow Regional Centre for the World Association of Nuclear Operators have paid an exchange visit to the Balakovo NPP.

An exchange visit is a new form of cooperation when the WANO MRC representatives visit the nuclear power plants to share best practices on managing their businesses. The WANO MRC has introduced this activity in 2015 and has already organized such visits to the Kursk and the Leningrad NPPs, the Tianwan NPP, the Paksh NPP, and the Busher NPP.

At the Balakovo NPP, the WANO MRC representatives along with the visitors from the Kursk, the Zaporozhye, and the Rivne NPPs headed by Anatoly Chukharev have completed a big piece of work. They have had a meeting with Viktor Ignatov, the NPP’s director and have reviewed the way the operational activities of the WANO representative at the Balakovo NPP are organized. The WANO visitors have also informed the hosts about the way their stations cooperate with the Moscow Regional Center for the WANO.

The team of experts has also inspected the way the staff is being trained at a comprehensive simulator, visited the workshops, the machine hall, and the 4th power block’s unit switchboard. There were also meetings between the managers and the specialists of the international cooperation, operation experience implementation and infringement investigation, inspection and quality control departments, where the guests have discussed several aspects of information exchange and elaborated recommendations on how to make the cooperation between the NPP and the WANO MRC more efficient.

Viktor Ignatov, the Balakovo NPP director, has noted that the nuclear power plant works a lot with the Moscow Regional Center for the WANO. He has paid special attention to how quickly and perfectly the WANO representatives provide information on operation experience, fostering the best practices, and sharing the Association’s documents.
During the final meeting, the WANO MRC team has told us how friendly and open-minded the Balakovo NPP experts are when discussing any questions.

The Balakovo NPP is an affiliate for the Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located on the left bank of the Saratov water reservoir, 10 kilometers to the north-east from the city of Balakovo, the Saratov Region. The NPP has four power block with modern VVER-1000 reactors (B-320 modification) boasting an electric capacity of 100 megawatts each. The first power block was launched operational in 1985, with the second, the third, and the fourth one being started in 1987, 1988, and 1993 respectively. The Balakovo NPP is one of the biggest and most contemporary power companies in Russia accounting for 25% of the electric power output in the Volga federal district, which caters to the population of the Volga region, the Central region, the Ural, and the Siberia.
