Based on the outcomes of the Partnership examination completed by the WANO on September 2, 2016, the Beloyarsk NPP’s best practices will be recommended for adoption at other NPPs in the world.

As Vladimir Bandurko (Ukraine), the head of the international expert team, mentioned during the final meeting, the Beloyarsk NPP boasts great and highly qualified staff. “We have worked closely with the specialists employed by your nuclear power plant. After a careful study, we have noticed some strong points and best practices that can be utilized in other countries. Another goal we had is to demonstrate what does the NPP can do better based on the global standards”, he said when expressing his appreciation to the Beloyarsk NPP team for their cooperation.

For over two weeks the 24 WANO international experts representing 9 countries carried out the Partnership examination at the Beloyarsk NPP. They reviewed the equipment, studied the documentation, and interview the department managers. The total track record of those specialists in the industry is 522, which evidences their competency.

The following aspects were covered during the examination: operation, technical support and maintenance, engineering infrastructure, operational track record and process improvement, radiation protection, chemical aspects, staff training, fire protection, accident prevention preparedness, human factor, organizational effectiveness, and administrative management.

Based on the outcomes of the examination, the experts will recommend at least 7 strong points discovered at the Beloyarsk NPP to be implemented at other NPPs, too. They have especially praised the NPP’s innovations in engineering infrastructure that are applicable for reactors of different types.

According to the WANO specialists, the Beloyarsk and the Novovoronezh NPPs launched in April and September 1964 respectively became the pioneers of the Russian nuclear power industry operations.

The Beloyarsk NPP has come into operation in April 1964. The first power blocks of the Beloyarsk NPP with thermal reactors AMB-100 and AMB-200 has been closed after the accumulated running time. The power block with a fast industrial capacity reactor BN-600 is still on. The power block with a fact reactor BN-800? is currently being prepared for coming into operation.
