The Smolensk NPP is preparing for the WANO partnership examination scheduled for 2017

In fall 2017, the international experts from the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) will carry out a comprehensive partnership examination at the Smolensk NPP. Its main goal is to find the ways to make the power blocks more reliable and to improve operational performance. The verification is based on the evaluation of the new production activities.

“To make the examination as efficient as possible, we need to study the new requirements carefully and to bring our operations into compliance with them”, said Alexandr Vasiliev, the Smolensk NPP director.

In 2017, the partnership examination will be based on a new methodology. The company’s operations will be evaluated depending on the type of a nuclear power plant. The WANO experts are to estimate how the Smolensk NPP project affects fundamental security functions, such as reactivity management, heat transfer from the reactor core, and many more.

In February-March 2017, the management of the international team will pay a preliminary visit to train the Smolensk NPP staff on the new methodology and to complete the inspection tours. They are planned to track the repair processes and the operators’ training at the unit control room simulator.

According to Ramil Galiev, the Smolensk NPP chief inspector, the nuclear power station has already formed working groups for them to get ready for the examination. Those groups will consist of the specialists who have already got acquainted with the new methodology during the technical support mission and have had a training at the WANO Moscow Center. The plant will be seamlessly preparing for the partnership examination with the guidance of the Smolensk NPP director.

The Smolensk nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The SNPP annually issues on the average about 20 billion kilowatts hours of the electric power into country power supply system, that constitutes about 13% of the energy, developed in «Rosenergoatom Concern», and more than 80% of the Smolensk region energy, developed by the power entities.
