The Rostov NPP: the unique make-up pump catering for security and cost-efficiency

The Rostov NPP are now at the closing stage of the comprehensive unique make-up pump (MUP-2) trial with the No. 3 and No.4 power block’s water scoop.

The construction’s differentiator is that the MUP-2 machinery hall (where the major pumping equipment is based) is set six meters lower than the Tsymlianskoe reservoir floor limit, which enables regular technical water supply to cater for the four NPP power blocks during the low-water season.

Every water reservoir has its own parameters. For example, according to the Baltic height system, the normal water level for the Tsymlianskoe reservoir is 36 meters. The floor limit that cannot be decreased due to the economic activities is 31 meter. The recent monitoring has demonstrated that the water level in the Tsymlianskoe reservoir has fallen down, so the nuclear power specialists and designers had to take the reservoir’s shallowing tendency into account when developing the project documentation and constructing the MUP-2.

“As of now, around 60 percent of the equipment has completed the trials, during which we have identified and fixed minor discrepancies in the equipment’s operations. This, in turn, will cater for reliable and secure operations once those facilities are launched”, said Vladimir Chebotarev, the head of the Rostov NPP supporting systems shop who is responsible for MUP-2 launch. JSC “NIAEP” carries our MUP-2 construction.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
