The Rostov NPP: the safety systems are being assembled at the 4th power block under construction

The safety system elements – the A-group electric pump unit for process water drainage pick-up and the deluge boric solution stirring electric pump - have been set upon the groundwork at the “minus 4.2 meters” mark at the Rostov NPP’s 4th power block under construction.

The process water system for the A group consumers combines the safety system and the normal operation system functions, that is, heat elimination from the so-called essential services, such as the cooling pond, the industrial circuit heat exchange units, a number of ventilation systems, etc.

The deluge system is designed to isolate accidents involving pipeline breaks in the first and the second circuit within the containment. When the power block runs normally, this system is at the standby and connected to a special container filled in with potassium borate solution. Upon the block protection signal, the deluge system is launched automatically and starts transferring boric solution into a number of injectors under the containment dome, which leads to vapor condensation and decrease in the containment’s pressure down to the normal parameters.

Besides, fire-proof doors are being assembled at the power block, and the main unit of the lightning protection system is being assembled at the facade.

The power block No. 4 is planned to be launched in 2017.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
