The Rostov NPP: the installation of the reactor safety system has started at the 4th power block under construction

The installation of the metal works for the two emergency core cooling system accumulators has started at the reactor hall of the Rostov NPP 4th power block under construction. The RosSEM Trest is taking care of the works as a contractor.

Alexey Fedotov, the deputy director of the Rostov NPP capital construction, commented on the installation progress: “The accumulators have undergone the acceptance test and have been placed to a special storage area. At the moment, we are installing the metal works in order to start the installation of the last two emergency core cooling system accumulators in August. These two accumulators are one of the main elements of this system and refer to the passive reactor shielding systems”.

The first two emergency core cooling system accumulators with the volume of 93 cubic meters and the weight of 86 tons were installed at the end of the last year. This system operates autonomously, with no staff or external power supply sources being involved. It consists of four independent accumulators filled in with a boric acid water solution, each of which is connected to the reactor vessel via a pipeline. In case the pressure in the first circuit gets below the pre-set level, the liquid is quickly pushed into the reactor to cool the core zone. Then, a nuclear reaction goes out due to the large amount of neutron-absorbing boric water.

The 4th power block is scheduled to be launched in 2017.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
