The Rostov NPP: nuclear power generation is the foundation of the Russian South’s economy

On May 13, during the visit to the Rostov NPP, Victor Deryabkin, the head of the Rostov region House of Assembly, stated that the nuclear power industry and this station itself are the foundations of the whole southern region’s economy. He has held a brief meeting with the NPP’s director Andrey Salnikov to discuss the issues of up-to-date operations and launching the power block No. 4 planned for 2017.

Victor Deryabkin has said that the importance of the Rostov NPP for the economy of the whole southern region is impossible to overestimate. “Other power generation sources with no nuclear power plant cannot produce the amount of electric power needed to foster the regional development. Last year, the manufacturing industry in the Rostov region has grown by 154%, which made us the first one in Russia. Q1 2016 made us grow by another 10% compared to the level achieved in 2015. The economy is evolving, and our own incomes exceed a billion dollars. It wouldn’t be possible without the Rostov NPP. The nuclear power industry is the cornerstone of our economy. The fact that the Rostov NPP caters for the Crimean demand for electric power means we’re addressing a strategic goal, and this is an important step in our history. That’s why I would like to thank everyone involved in station’s construction and operation – it works safely, effectively, and reliably. Hats off to the Volgodonsk nuclear experts!”, said the head of the Don parliament.

The Rostov NPP is one of the biggest power production enterprises in the south of Russia. Nuclear generation accounts for over 50% of the electric power outputted on the Don. The total capacity of the three Rostov NPP power blocks is 3070 megawatt-hours. The nuclear power plant produces around 75 million megawatt-hours on a daily basis. Five transmission lines deliver electric power to the Volgograd and the Rostov regions, as well as to the Krasnodar and the Stavropol territories. In 2015, the NPP has delivered 20.5 billion megawatt-hours, accounting for 10.25% of the total electric power produced by Rosenergoatom. All in all, the Rostov NPP has outputted over 163.4 billion megawatt-hours since its launch.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
