The Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is open to international cooperation on nuclear power plants operation and maintenance

The Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC*, the company operating all Russian NPPs, is open to collaboration on nuclear power plants operation and maintenance with companies from all over the world.

That was the statement Boris Arseev, the Rosenergoatom deputy CEO and the business development director, made during the briefing on May 31, 2016, as a part of the 8th International ATOMEXPO 2016*** Forum. The event participants have discussed multiple issues of NPPs support abroad, exchanged their experiences, and elaborated on the current foreign projects.

“The Concern has accumulated significant experience in NPPs operation, maintenance, life extension, and modernization, which is in high demand over the world. In 2015, we have extended the lifetime of the Balakovo NPP power block No. 1 for 30 years and have obtained licenses to operate the Kursk NPP 4th power block and the Smolensk NPP 2nd power block for other 15 and 10 years respectively. We address our life extension objectives in 2016, too, working on the Kalinin NPP, the Novovoronezh NPP, and the Balakovo NPP”, said Mr. Arseev.

Modernizing power blocks based on the experienced accumulated in Russia is one of the main areas of collaboration with foreign partners, and a specially established Rusatom Service JSC company is responsible for it. This enterprise is already on the market in 11 countries servicing almost all operating VVER power blocks outside Russia.

At the moment, the most significant modernization project Rusatom Service is involved in is extending the Armenian NPP power block No. 2 lifetime. “During this project, ourselves and the customer needed to restore the equipment life and to upgrade the NPP’s security level up to the modern requirements. As a result, the Metsamor NPP can safely and effectively operate for many years to come”, noted Dmitriy Pashevich, the deputy CEO of Rusatom Service JSC.

Answering the media’s question on some problems with financing the project and possible delays in the Armenian NPP’s modernization, Dmitriy Pashevich reassured that the funding has been allocated. “The invoices Rusatom Service issues are fully paid”, he stressed.

When dwelling on another running project, the Kozloduy NPP, Mr. Pashevich also said that this NPP’s power block No.6 turbine generator has been upgraded jointly with the Silovye Mashiny JSC. “Our responsibilities pursuant to this contract have been performed successfully. As a result, we have landed another project with our Bulgarian customer, and now we are working to modernize the turbine generator at the power block No.5 of the Kozloduy NPP. Those projects are important steps for the customer to increase the power blocks’ capacity and, consequently, to produce more electric power”.

The Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC comprises all 10 nuclear power plants in Russia bearing the Concern affiliate status, as well as the enterprises catering for the generating company’s operations. There are 35 power blocks being used at the 10 nuclear power plants: 18 of them having VVER-type reactor units (12 VVER-1000 power blocks and 6 VVER-440 blocks of different modifications); 15 of them having channel-type reactors (11 power blocks with RBMK-1000 reactors and 4 blocks with EGP-6 reactors); 2 power blocks with BN-600 and BN-800 sodium-cooled fast reactors.
