The Novovoronezh NPP: the world’s first innovative 3+ power block is to be plugged in summer 2016

The Novovoronezh NPP (No.1 LM NPP-2) power block No.6 is to be plugged in this summer, as the nuclear power plant director Vladimir Povarov has stated during the operation headquarters session.

The OJSC Concern Rosenergoatom CEO Andrey Petrov has noted that the strict preparation schedule should not put people’s life in danger and has stressed that security is a top priority.

On March 29, the session participants - Rosenergoatom CEO Andrey Petrov, the Novovoronezh NPP director Vladimir Povarov and the head of ASE Group Valery Limarenko – have inspected the startup facilities, including the reactor building, the modular control station, the solid radioactive waste storage facility, the waste treatment facilities, and the nitrogen-oxygen plant.

The session participants have discussed the equipment supply, the timelines for approval documents receipt, the way some of the operations needed to reach the minimum controllable power levels are progressing and the 6th power block physical start-up operations.

Andrey Petrov has congratulated all of the parties involved on the latter, noting that the core fueling is an important step in the work schedule. He has also stressed that moving to the power start-up in a timely fashion depends on how strictly all further steps are followed. “If there are any risks in place, we need to know those in advance and eliminate them as soon as possible”.

Meanwhile, the head of ASE Group Valery Limarenko has confirmed that, despite the tough schedule, the general contractor will do its best to provision for timely power start-up and plug-in.

At the moment, the previously placed fuel assembly imitators at the Novovoronezh NPP power block No.6 are being replaced with nuclear fuel assemblies. As of March 30, 108 out of 163 assemblies have already been substituted.

When talking about the 6th power block physical start-up, the Novovoronezh NPP director Vladimir Povarov said: “The physical start-up began with the first fuel assembly being installed on March 2016, at 3:28 am (Moscow time). We have an hourly chart for all operations. We have started with the reactor assembly and its core fueling, moving forward to the trials carried out under at subcritical state. And then we have reached the minimum controllable power level and have plugged the block in, thus jumping to the power start-up. The physical start-up phase takes around 55 days. Afterwards, we will carry out power start-up trials for several weeks”.

According to Mr . Povarov, the core fueling is scheduled to be completed on April 2, 2016. “The NPP teams takes this as a milestone, as it marks the real operational launch of the power block and its further plug-in. We have to hand the power block in for commercial operation until the end of the year. That said, the Voronezh Region will receive additional tax income from the Novovoronezh NPP operation in general and from the 6th power block in particular. Those taxes will add up to the budget of Novovoronezh and will enable the city authorities to complete the enhancements they aspire for”.
