The Novovoronezh NPP: the Turkish nuclear power engineers-to-be have had an on-the-job training at the innovative new-generation power block

35 Turkish 4th-year students of the Obninsk Nuclear Power Institute (NIAU MIFI) have completed their on-the-job training at the Novovoronezh NPP. For 2 weeks, the nuclear power engineers-to-be mastered the reactor unit systems of the innovative 6th power block with a VVER-1200 reactor.

The classes took place at the international training center. The Novovoronezh NPP became the first Russian nuclear power station to establish such facility aimed at reaching the Rosatom’s strategic goals.

“We will be the first engineers working at a similar station, which is being constructed in our country. That’s a great responsibility”, said Turkel Rengin, a Turkish student of the Obninsk Nuclear Power Institute. “During the training, we asked a lot of questions and received comprehensive and transparent answers. I got convinced that Russia boasts the world’s best nuclear power station and teachers”.

This is the first Turkish group studying nuclear power in a Russian institute. The students have gone through a rigorous selection process in Turkey and speak Russian fluently.

After graduation, they will have a 3-years’ internship in Russia. Afterwards, pursuant to the agreement, they will have to work in their country for at least 15 years.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor.

The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1979. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The new innovative power units with capacity 1200 MW have been constructed at the construction site of the Novovoronezh NPP since 2007.

Since June 2007 Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC has been involved into the construction of the two new-generation Novovoronezh NPP power generation plants based on the NPP-2006 project as the owner and the developer. The construction is carried out in accord-ance with the operational program of the national nuclear corporation ROSATOM enacted by the Government of the Russian Federation in the Resolution No. 705 dated September 20, 2008, and is funded at the expense of Rosenergoatom and the asset contribution. VVER-1200 reactor units will operate at the new LM NPP blocks.

The VVER-1200 RU project complies with all Russian and international security standards. Its main differentiator is the improved security system that makes the project’s security parameters second to none.
