The Novovoronezh NPP: The representatives of the Slovenske Electrarne (Slovakia) have explored the best practices in pre-commissioning activities at a new generation power block

The Slovenske Electrarne management has paid a visit to the Novovoronezh NPP. The company is the main power generator in Slovakia. At the moment, the Mochovce* NPP’s 3rd and 4th power blocks are going through the pre-commissioning activities, and the visit was dedicated to this topic.

The Slovakian experts were especially interested in the new generation power blocks’ construction and pre-commissioning. The guests have been at the Novovoronezh NPP training center, the innovative 6th power block’s site, and met with the Novovoronezhatomtechenergo representatives.

“We would like to understand how the transition from construction to pre-commissioning at the new Novovoronezh VVER-1200 power block happens”, said Giancarlo Aquilanti, the Slovenske Electrarne project management support director. “That’s where we are with our power blocks in Slovakia. We have continued with the construction started in 1980’s; however, we need to comply with the EU requirements”.

“We are interested in the pre-commissioning and trial schedules”, said Peter Andrashko, the Slovenske Electrarne director of operational commissioning and nuclear safety supervision. “I’m convinced that our schedules have room for improvements, and we’d like to hear your point of view. The first circuit equipment is supplied by Skoda; however, for the pre-commissioning activities, we would like to work with your experts”.

The VVER-440 power blocks have proven to be reliable and safe, and are still sought-after all over the world, while the Novovoronezh nuclear power experts remain the mentors for their construction and operation.

* The Mochovce NPP is constructed based on a Soviet project and produces around 20% of the electric power consumed in Slovakia. The Mochovce NPP’ss VVER-440 power blocks were launched operational in 1998 and 1999 respectively. In 1991, the project on building the other 2 similar power blocks was postponed, with its recommencement in 2008 by the Italian Enel company with the approval of the Slovakian population. The power blocks are to be launched in 2017 and 2018.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1979. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The new innovative power units with capacity 1200 MW have been constructed at the construction site of the Novovoronezh NPP since 2007.

Since June 2007 Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC has been involved into the construction of the two new-generation Novovoronezh NPP power generation plants based on the NPP-2006 project as the owner and the developer. The construction is carried out in accord-ance with the operational program of the national nuclear corporation ROSATOM enacted by the Government of the Russian Federation in the Resolution No. 705 dated September 20, 2008, and is funded at the expense of Rosenergoatom and the asset contribution. VVER-1200 reactor units will operate at the new LM NPP blocks.

The VVER-1200 RU project complies with all Russian and international security standards. Its main differentiator is the improved security system that makes the project’s security parameters second to none.
