The Novovoronezh NPP: The Social and economic development fund is to be established in Novovoronezh under the auspices of Rosatom

The Regional operations department and the Rosatom Public Council have held a number of events in Novovoronezh to discuss up-to-date issues of implementing the Federal law No.173 dated June 28, 2014, and Vladimir Putin’s presidential decree dated May 7, 2012 “About strategic planning”.

“Novovoronezh needs a social and economic development fund to support public initiatives on the nuclear city advancement. I guess it will be ready to start in just 1-2 months”, said Yury Tevin, the head of the working group on regional development at the Rosatom Public Council, when summarizing the results of his discussions with people in Novovoronezh. The expert believes in the city’s great potential for investments; however, the locals do not take advantage of the governmentally-supported development institutions.

Yury Tebin and other experts of the Rosatom Public Council have met with the representatives of educational establishments, business societies, youth organizations’ leaders, local parliament deputies, and the municipal administrators to negotiate on the up-to-date initiatives for the nuclear city development.

The specialists spent two days telling about what the State corporation does and analyzing suggestions on how the nuclear power industry employees can make their city better.

“Rosatom has three basic development goals: to enter new markets, to make its enterprises operate more efficiently, and to deliver new products. According to the “30/30” formula, by 2030 30% of Rosatom’s production is to consist of things the company does not deliver at the moment. This goal is both ambitious and attainable. That’s why we inspire the public to introduce new companies and establishments”, explained Yury Tebin, adding that the nuclear power plant and Rosatom should not be the only sources of funding city development.
According to the expert, the people of Novovoronezh have come up with at least one hundred suggestions on how to make their city more attractive for investors. Mr. Tebin has noted the three most interesting ones he is going to advocate when speaking with the Rosatom management: including the Atomenetgozapchast plant into the Rosatom’s circuit and developing additive technologies there, setting up a water use schedule at the pond used for cooling the nuclear power plant, and construction of a wedding palace.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor.

The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1979. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The new innovative power units with capacity 1200 MW have been constructed at the construction site of the Novovoronezh NPP since 2007.
