The Novovoronezh NPP operation support system developed by ABB will cater for new quality of nuclear power plant management processes

ABB, a leading provider of production automation solutions, have delivered an information-based operation support system to the Novovoronezh NPP (an affiliate company of the Rosenergoatom Concern*)**, the biggest atomic power enterprise in Russia.

As a part of modernization plan, the Novovoronezh NPP was to make the NPP operative management more efficient, while improving its equipment and systems’ reliability and safety.

One of the main tools to address those issues was the information-based operation support system developed by ABB based on the eSOMS 3.9 software platform.

The companies executed the agreement back in March 2015, and in December last year the operation support system was deployed at the 5th power block.

It is planned to implement the suite at the Novovoronezh NPP 3rd and 4th power blocks by the end of 2017. Further on, the plant intends to launch the system at the two new power blocks currently under construction.

The total cost of the project exceeds 20 million rubles.

The ABB team jointly with their partner, Inline Group, have reviewed the facility carefully and elaborated a specification. Afterwards, the operators’ round management, operational journals, administrative and technical orders journals, defect logs, operative staff shift management operative reporting based on the outcomes of the rounds and the operative journals’ data (timesheets, reports, operative journals and other reporting documents) features were implemented.

The system hosts a database for building and equipment rounds and has all the necessary design and operation documents. The ABB team has completed the handover trials, conducted trainings for the Novovoronezh NPP staff, and launched the system operationally.

This solution will help the company to both improve equipment rounds’ efficiency (using mobile devices) and to make the information on the current status of the equipment more up-to-date and precise. Besides, the system will track operating history.

“Facilitating secure and reliable running of a nuclear power plant is one of the key tasks, which heavily depends on how automated the operational processes are”, said Nikolay Stepin, the deputy chief engineer of the Novovoronezh NPP third-priority operation. “The power industry automation solutions provided by ABB are reputable both in Russia and the whole world. This system has been working at the Smolensk NPP for over 2 years. That is why we expect that the eSOMS operation support system implemented at the Novovovonezh NPP will make out operational staff’s work more efficient and productive, reduce the risks of human errors, improve production morale, thus leading to the brand new quality of the production processes at the Novovoronezh NPP”.

*The Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC comprises all 10 nuclear power plants in Russia bearing the Concern affiliate status, as well as the enterprises catering for the generating company’s operations. There are 35 power blocks being used at the 10 nuclear power plants: 18 of them having VVER-type reactor units (12 VVER-1000 power blocks and 6 VVER-440 blocks of different modifications); 15 of them having channel-type reactors (11 power blocks with RBMK-1000 reactors and 4 blocks with EGP-6 reactors); 2 power blocks with BN-600 and BN-800 sodium-cooled fast reactors.

At the moment, the Rosenergoatom NPPs account for 18.6% of the whole electricity output in the country.

** The Novovoronezh NPP is the oldest atomic power enterprise in Russia, which accounts for around 85% of the Voronezh Region electric power demand and for up to 90% of the Novovoronezh city heat demand. During the whole operation time, the Novovoronezh NPP has delivered over 500 billion kilowatt-hours of electric power.
