The Leningrad NPP: the representatives of the Dukovany NPP area have had a look at the new Russian power blocks

The mayors of 15 cities and towns located in the Dukovany NPP area (Czech Republic) have paid a visit to Sosnovy Bor for a meeting with the city and the Leningrad NPP management. The parties have discussed the issues related to the operational security of the Leningrad NPP power blocks (both running and under construction), the way they influence the environment and the population, and the NPP’s impact on the social and economic status of Sosnovy Bor.

Jon Alesh, the head of the Czech delegation, the former Dukovany NPP director, said: “Most of the mayors coming to Sosnovy Bor today are the members of the Civil commission for the Dukovany NPP social security, which is headed by myself. We have come to the Leningrad NPP to get acquainted with the VVER-1200 project. Our country plans to advance the nuclear power industry and to construct substitution power blocks. In the future, Czech Republic is to choose the project suitable for it in terms of reliability, safety, and environmental protection”.

When talking about the new power blocks construction project, Konstantin Kudriavtsev, the Leningrad NPP chief engineer, said that it addressed multiple issues: risk minimization, performance build-up thanks to the most up-to-date well-proven technical solutions and the referential equipment, having active and passive security systems in place, tolerance against human errors, self-protection against accidents, etc.

“The solutions laid out in the project are based on the long-lasting experience of operating thirty VVER-1000 power blocks in a safe manner. They will cater for a reliable and secure maintenance of the nuclear power plant, excluding any negative impact on the population and the environment”, Konstantin Germanovich commented. He stressed that the power block of the Chinese Tianwan NPP, the most modern, reliable, and secure ones according to the IAEA, were the prototypes for the new Leningrad NPP blocks.

Referring to the Leningrad NPP’s social responsibility, Dmitry Puliaevskiy, the Sosnovy Bor mayor, said that the backbone enterprise has been in charge of this mission for over four decades: the nuclear power plant has been investing into the schools’ classrooms, sport halls, and stadiums, improvements of the public monuments, amateur performers’ road tours, concerts, sporting events, important public and cultural events and many more. “The new Leningrad NPP power blocks is the key to the city’s development and prosperity for many years to come”, Dmitry Vitalievich summarized.

Miroslav Krzhishtial, the Dukovany mayor, said: “I’m impressed with how much does the Leningrad NPP do for the Sosnovy Bor dwellers. I can see that the nuclear power plant and the city act as one. I was astonished at the number of sporting events held in your city, and I should say we can’t boast the same. I admire your success!”

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
