The Leningrad NPP: the reactor’s thrust truss at the 2nd power block under construction has been concreted
The works on concreting the reactor’s thrust truss have been completed at the Leningrad NPP’s 2nd power block under construction. The welded metal works weighing 27 tons are one of the major construction elements of the reactor pit designed to fix the reactor’s unit in its final position.
Once installed at their designed spot, the works were filled in with 11 cubic meters of special serpentinite concrete. At the moment, the concrete is being taken care of. This filler loosens the neutron flux effectively outside the reactor pit. As a result, during the whole period of the power block’s operation, the thrust truss will also act as a biological shield protecting the building structure from the reactor’s core ionizing radiation and diminishing the thermal radiation from its unit.
All in all, the reactor pit’s equipment consists of up to 15 construction elements with their total weight of over 140 tons. At the moment, 5 basic elements of the reactor pit have already been installed. The contracting company’s specialists start working on the complex reinforcement, as they are to install around 50 tons of fits. Afterwards, the reactor pit along with the thrust truss will be concreted. Upon completion of the construction activities, the backup ring and the reactor unit will be installed into the pit’s concrete frame.
The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
