The Leningrad NPP: the environment management system complies with the international standards

On May 4-5, 2016, an audit took place at the Leningrad NPP to verify its environment management system’s (EMS) compliance with the national (GOST R ISO 14001-2007) and the international (ISO 14001:2004) standards. According to the inspection results, the station was announced to be fully compliant with the requirements.

The main aim of the audit was to evaluate the EMS performance at the Leningrad NPP: the company’s environmental policy, the way the EMS functions and how it is being improved, whether the certification requirements are followed, the effectiveness of the measures taken based on the previous audit.

“The Leningrad NPP has confirmed its EMS’s compliance with the environmental certificate issued”, said Yulia Vasilieva, the head of the audit group representing the independent management system certification authority DQS. “The station demonstrates maximal transparency and pays lots of attention to environmental aspects of its operations”.

The auditors have noted a number of the Leningrad NPP EMS’s strengths, including the Kopanskoe health & recreation resort’s treatment facilities modernization, enhancing the efficiency of the fresh water use, cutting the use of paper thanks to the electronic document management, etc.

The Leningrad NPP environmental policy was adopted in 2008, and then the nuclear station started preparations for the environment management system certification to confirm its compliance with the national standards. The company has designated individuals responsible for the EMS, introduced a guide on the environment management system, identified the ecological aspects of its usage, and set its goals and objectives.

In 2010, as a result of a certification audit, the Leningrad NPP has received a compliance certification verifying the EMS’s conformance to the national GOST R ISO 14001-2006 standard. In 2012, the station has received a certificate confirming its EMS’s compliance with the international ISO 14001:2004 standard.

“We need to restate our conformity to the highest standards on an annual basis, which is why we improve our EMS’s operations regularly”, Alexander Tkachev, the head of the Leningrad NPP environment protection department, has commented. “We stick to our environmental policy, define the ecological aspects, attain our goals, carry out internal audits, and train our personnel on how to use the environment management system”.

At the moment, the Leningrad NPP EMS covers 59 departments, 24 of them have elements that impact the environment directly through their production operations. Other 35 departments do not influence the environment directly, as they are responsible for the NPP production departments’ management and control and cater for human, financial, and technical resources.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each.
