The Leningrad NPP: the delegation from Bangladesh has paid a visit to the new power blocks’ construction site

High-ranking guests from the People's Republic of Bangladesh have paid a visit to the Leningrad NPP substitution capabilities’ construction site. The delegation consisted of Abul Maal Abdul Mukhit (the finance minister), Saiful Hok (the country’s ambassador), and Ashfakul Islam Babul (the commercial advisor for the Bangladeshi Embassy in the Russian Federation).

At first, the guests have received detailed information on how the existing RMBK-1000 power blocks of the Leningrad NPP operate and the way they are modernized, along with the progress on the new VVER-1200 power blocks construction. Many foreign partners of the Rosatom Corporation looking into nuclear power industry development in their own countries demonstrate high interest in the technical peculiarities of the Leningrad NPP project.

“We are now in the process of constructing our very first nuclear power station, said Abul Maal Abdul Mukhit, the finance minister, in his interview. – For 60 years, our country has had a dream of building its own NPP. For around thirty years we have been in negotiations with the French power experts, and have allocated a construction site; however, throughout all this time, the technologies under discussion got outdated, and we needed to catch up with the new ones. As of now, our countries have signed a cooperation memorandum, and we are planning an NPP construction. The Rooppur nuclear power plant will be erected based on the Russian project, and I need to know its cost. During my visit to the International Economic Forum in Saint Petersburg, I took a chance to visit the Leningrad NPP and could verify it is highly protected from different incidents. It’s a very important aspect for us, too, because the NPP is to be constructed in a densely populated area, so we need to make sure it is safe for the environment and for the people. The fact that has astonished me is that the new-generation power block life span can be up to 90 years: 60 years according to the project and another 30 years if prolonged upon review, repair, or modernization. Besides, another joint program is in progress at the moment, as the Russian colleagues provide training to our associates. I would also like to say that we are very happy about the level of training delivered and we look forward to having highly-skilled staff to operate our capabilities”.

The guests have also told us about the preparation activities being carried out at the Rooppur NPP construction site and the team of specialists working on different aspects. The NPP site is based on the eastern bank of the Ganges river, in the city of Rooppur, around 160 kilometers away from Dakkah, the capital of Bangladesh. The power plant will include two power blocks with VVER reactor. The first power block is planned to be launched in the early 2020s.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 80 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each.

The substitution capabilities for the existing nuclear power plant have been in construction since 2008. Two VVER-1200 power blocks are being constructed in accordance with the NPP-2006 project.

Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
