The Leningrad NPP: the STUK specialists have praised the technology and the speed of the installation and pre-commissioning activities at the first power block under construction

“The installation and pre-commissioning activities at an NPP” seminar took place at the Leningrad NPP on April 25-28. The representatives of the Finnish radiation and nuclear security center (STUK), Rostechnadzor and the Leningrad NPP took part in the event aimed at exchanging the best practices in terms of the main technological environment installation and setup at the power blocks constructed.

The Russian and Finnish specialists have discussed a number of topics of mutual interest: installation and pre-commissioning activities for the pipeworks, primary coolant equipment, protective covers, and inspection of the facilities constructed, organizational aspects, and training.

“We’ve had very constructive and friendly negotiations. We have told our Finnish colleagues about how we work with the manufacturers, how the installation works acceptance is organized, and how we plan and control the construction and installation activities”, Alexey Mochalov, the deputy head of the reactor workshop on the Leningrad NPP installation, elaborated on the outcomes of the seminar.

During the years of cooperation between the Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC and the STUK, our foreign partners visit the Leningrad NPP’s replacement capacities construction site on a regular basis to follow the course of the new power blocks’ erection.

“The first power block installation is going swiftly”, said Yukka Kallionpiaa, the Olkiluoto NPP inspector, one of the STUK specialists. “The process has advanced significantly compared to what I saw at the reactor unit last December. Generally, there is incredible progress at the whole power block. I have no concerns regarding the installation works at the Leningrad NPP-2 construction site. The level achieved is more than mature”.

Finland boasts one of the world’s strictest nuclear power supervisory authorities, which means that the praise from the Finnish specialist can be deemed as another evidence of constructors’ and installation specialists’ successful work.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
