The Leningrad NPP: in 2015, 29.4% of the electric power for economic needs was saved

During the regional phase of the Russian nationwide energy efficiency festival #VmesteYarche held on September 3, 2016, at the main square in the city of Sosnovy Bor, the Leningrad NPP presented its running energy saving and energy efficiency promotion program.

The company took part in the exhibition of vendors delivering energy saving equipment. The city dwellers, the representatives of its administration, and power industry officials were interested in learning energy efficiency tips and tricks the Leningrad NPP posted on their information stand.

The Leningrad NPP’s main energy saving goals are: to make fuel and energy usage more efficient, to cut operational costs and the main product’s net cost, to make the enterprise more power efficient and, as a result, more economically effective.

The main activities of this program are: to cut the expenses for their own needs, improved energy efficiency, automated water, heat, and electricity consumption account, etc.

For example, the partial modernization of turbines increased their capacity by 16 megawatts. The replacement of the cold-water supply conducts resulted in cutting transportation expenses. Besides, in 2015, the company saved 44.5 thousand cubic meters of cold water.

To minimize the electric power consumption, the Leningrad NPP has modernized its illumination system by replacing ordinary lamps with LED ones and changed its overaged elevator for a modern frequency regulated one. In 2015, the plant has saved 29.4% (58.5 thousand kilowatt-hours) of electric power compared to 2009.

The outcomes of the energy saving measures at the Leningrad NPP were tremendous. Thanks to the technical modernization of the heat production processes and cutting their own heat consumption, the nuclear power plant has fully supplied the city of Sosnovy Bor with heat. In 2015, the company saved 228.5 thousand gigacalories.

“The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant to launch the energy saving and energy efficiency promotion program in 2011. We have been producing power for over 40, so no one else knows how important it is to be prudent about any energy resources. We need to nurture this culture, and that’s what we urge our city dwellers to do”, said Vladimir Pereguda, the Leningrad NPP director, when addressing the guest of the festival. He suggested that every person in the city should sign one’s own personal declaration of intent to take good care of the country’s energy resources, the power engineers’ efforts, and the optimized electricity and heat expenses.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
