The Leningrad NPP: The management of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) has reviewed the VVER-1200 project

A seminar involving the management of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority took place at the Leningrad NPP. The meeting was initiated by the Swedish colleagues during one of the conferences between Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Russia in the context of exchanging their experience in security, radioactive waste handling and NPP’s decommissioning.

“We are here to learn more about the VVER-1200 project, pursuant to which the new Leningrad NPP power blocks are being constructed. There is no wonder we are interested in it because Sweden and Russia have a common border. We need to understand what type of reactors are those and their peculiarities. It’s essential for us to ensure that the substitution capabilities of the Leningrad NPP are safe for the environment and for the population in the area. I believe the dialogue we’ve had today was transparent and useful. We got comprehensive and honest answers to all the questions we had asked in regards to the basic principles and approaches for project design, its parameters, and security systems”, said Jan Frederic Hassel, the SSM deputy CEO.

He also added that, to his mind, the cooperation in nuclear power engineering between Russia and the Scandinavian countries was fruitful and successful. “We need to promote our relations, as those are mutually beneficial”, Mr. Hassel summarized.

Meanwhile, Sergey Raykov, the director of the Rosatom’s Nuclear and radiation security department responsible for licensing and permission activities, said: “The seminar we’ve had today is not dedicated to any topic; however, it is directly related to the security of the new Leningrad NPP’s power blocks. We tried to reassure our colleagues that the Leningrad NPP’s substitution capabilities are secure, reliable, and are backed by unique technical solutions”.

He stressed that the VVER-1200 project complies with any relevant Russian and international standards and rules, including the IAEA and the EUR requirements. “We hope that our partners communicate this information to the population of our neighboring countries, including Sweden, so that people now that the power blocks that are now being constructed in Sosnovy Bor are reliable, safe, and environment-friendly”, Sergey Raykov said.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 80 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each.

The substitution capabilities for the existing nuclear power plant have been in construction since 2008. Two VVER-1200 power blocks are being constructed in accordance with the NPP-2006 project.

Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
