The Leningrad NPP under construction is getting ready for the first circulation pump station’s electric motor idling

The construction site of the new Leningrad NPP power blocks is still busy with the installation of the turbine building users pump station equipment, with three circulating-water pump houses installed and concreted. The pump houses are the main technological facilities consisting of two parts – the pumps and the electric motors.

When running the first power block, water from the evaporative cooling towers’ catch basins will be supplied into the turbine building to cool the condensers down and into the water treatment building to prepare chemically demineralized water that will subsequently be used for the plant’s technological processes.

«The pumping assemblies will supply water onto the turbine condensers and the ejector’s elevator pumps in all normal operational modes”, Anatoliy Gnevashev, the head of the turbine workshop at the Leningrad NPP under construction, said. “Out of four equipment units, the first pumping assembly has been fully installed and is now being prepared for idling. The second circulation pump is nearing completion, and shortly the team can move forward with the third one. Later on, all those pumps will be tested idle and then loaded”.

As of now, a single-span electric bridge crane has been installed and commissioned, and four mechanical treating facilities working as a two-loop spinning water treatment net with external water supply has been installed and idled at the pump station building. These brand new treatment facilities are being used at the Leningrad NPP only. Additionally, three pump assemblies for sea water supply to the non-urgent customers of the machinery hall, the water treatment installation pumps, and other pieces of equipment have been installed and idled.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
