The Leningrad NPP delegation has studied the best practices in nuclear reactors proper shutdown in the city of Seversk, the Tomsk Region

The Leningrad NPP delegation headed by the plant’s director Vladimir Pereguda has visited the “Pilot and Demonstration Center for Decommissioning of Uranium-Graphite Nuclear Reactors” JSC (“PDC UGR” JSC) based in the city of Seversk (the Tomsk Region).

Their goal was to study the best practices in nuclear reactors proper shutdown and to familiarize themselves with the radiated graphite handling know-hows. The Leningrad NPP power block No.1 operation is due to expire in 2018, so the issues of its proper shutdown are critical.

“Our nuclear power station awaits for its first power block to be closed. That’s why we have asked our colleagues in Seversk to share their experience on handling radioactive elements, firm and fluid nuclear waste, and, what is more important, the radiated graphite. I’m sure some of those aspects will be extremely helpful and will be applied at our plant, too”, said Vladimir Pereguda.

During the visit, the PDC UGR specialists have demonstrated the center’s capabilities on radiation hazardous facilities’ preparation for shutdown and proper shutdown, the technologies elaborated and implemented, along with their set of tools.
The PDC UGR director, Andrey Izmestyev, said: “The hands-on experience we have accumulated, the technical resources and capabilities, including the top-notch equipment and mobile facilities, enable us to render works with any degree of complexity all around the world. I guess what we have demonstrated today to our colleagues from the Leningrad NPP will be a great asset for them”.

The guests have also paid a visit to the reactor’s desk in the central hall, have seen the prototype test stand, the technical pond, the reactor unit bottom elevation, the electricity station, the complex engineering and radiation safety audit laboratory, the graphite stack stand, and the EI-2 reactor conservation point.

The Leningrad NPP and the PDC UGR are planning to continue working together in order to discuss specific technical aspects.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each.
