The Kursk nuclear power plant: repeated international insurance inspection

The repeated international insurance inspection (MSI) finished work on the Kursk nuclear power plant on October 4, 2013.

During this and previous day seven members of inspection checked accomplishment of recommendations of the international insurance inspection which had been carried out on the Kursk nuclear power plant in October, 2010. Then inspection came to a conclusion that, the risk of nuclear responsibility of the third party, proceeding from operation of the Kursk nuclear power plant reactors, can be insured by Nuclear pools.

Present visit had also the purpose to obtain updated data on operational characteristics of the Kursk nuclear power plant power units.

The representatives of the Russian and Ukrainian insurance pools who were a part of inspection, made bypasses of all four operating power units of the nuclear station, including auxiliary buildings. Groups of inspectors on check of nuclear safety, operation and risks of responsibility worked at objects of the nuclear power plant before the third side, and also on check of fire-proof protection. They talked with the personnel.

Inspectors studied the report on elimination of notes MSI of 2010 on the Kursk nuclear power plant. Specialists of station provided complete amount of data on operation indicators, on condition of reactors raphite laying and taken measures for recovery of its resource characteristics, results of partner checks of VAO nuclear power plant and other external checks for inspections. Updated information on a program implementation of upgrade and prolongation of useful lives of station, about the post-Fukushima actions accepted on the Kursk nuclear power plant were also transferred.

At final meeting it was noted that the main part of recommendations of insurance inspection of 2010 has been executed, some are being in implementation phase. Adjusted totals of work of MSI on the Kursk nuclear power plant will be brought by March, 2014.

There are power units No. 1 and No. 3 in work at the moment. They work at the capacity established by the dispatching schedule. On power units No. No. 2 and 4 planned repairs are carried out.

The radiation background on the nuclear power plant and around its arrangement is at the level corresponding to normal operation of power units, and doesn't exceed natural background values.
