The Kursk NPP: the constructors are getting ready for extensive works at the substitution station construction site

High readiness for massive works on constructing new power blocks was the main topic of the 30th brief dedicated to the Kursk NPP-2 substitution station construction.

During the meeting involving the representatives of the Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, the JSC NIAEP as the general designer and prime contractor, and the contracting organizations, it was noted that 596 million rubles (16% of the yearly budget) out of 607,4 million rubles (12 of the yearly budget) investments in building and installation activities have been allocated by this May. Around 340 million rubles are planned to be utilized in May. Overall, the station is supposed to take advantage of 16 billion rubles’ funds.

Obtaining a license for power blocks No.1 and 2 construction is another important upcoming next step. The supporting materials are now being reviewed by Rostechnadzor (the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological, and Atomic Supervision). “We expect to receive the license in the next couple of days; afterwards, the active phase is to start”, said the Kursk NPP-2 construction director, the JSC NIAEP Kursk affiliate office director, Igor Kruuz. The construction approval will mark the way towards the new construction stage aimed at soil yield and replacement for the power blocks No.1 and 2 foundation trench.

Thus, up to 90 thousand cubic meters of soil are to be excavated in May. The Lipino and the Byki pits will provide sand. The CJSC MPS engineering is the contracting company responsible for constructing a road to the Lipino pit. During the meeting, the contractor’s representative stated that they had started working and were aiming to complete those by October 2016. At the moment, 282 specialists are involved at the construction site.

In April 2016, as a part of the Kursk NPP-2 construction, 114 tons of steel constructions were assembled for the reinforced metal blocks’ production department; the metal storage hall foundation is nearing completion; the material storages are being formed based on the Kursk NPP production and processing equipment agency; the temporary road has been established at the construction site; 81.2 thousand cubic meters of sand have been washed to the construction site; the road to the unbalanced soil pile at the Kozhlia village is being developed.

The meeting followed the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. The security aspects were also discussed actively during the event, with special attention being paid to hot works and elevated works. No accidents or fires have been registered at the construction site since January 2016. On the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the prime contractor has organized a briefing on collaboration and secure operations, along with an exhibition of the leading personal protection equipment vendors in the Kursk region. A training for the contractor’s activity managers on job engineering based on an authorized order is to be held in May.

The Kursk NPP-2 is a replacement station for the currently operating Kursk nuclear power plant’s power blocks taken out of service. Pursuant to The Russian Federation energy land-use planning scheme valid until 2030 and approved by the Government of the Russian Federation in November 2013, the four NPP-2 replacement power blocks operating a new-generation VVER reactor will be located in the Kursk Region. The operational launch of the first two NPP-2 power blocks is planned to be synchronized with the running nuclear power stations’ power blocks taken out of service. The OJSC Concern Rosatom is the building owner and the technical customer for the project. JSC "NIAEP" acts as the general designer and the general contractor.

* VVER-TOI is a typical optimized and computerized two-block NPP project with a VVER-1300 (water-cooled power reactor), a further step in NPP-2006 project development. The goal of this development is to elaborate a typical VVER NPP power block project optimized according to the technical and economic parameters and completed within the contemporary IT environment. VVER-TOI is developed based on the project materials elaborated for the NPP-2006 project and with due account for the experience the industry bodies have accumulated during the latest VVER NPP projects (Novovoronezh NPP-2). The VVER-TOI project takes advantage of the best practices in VVER NPP construction and maintenance activities from all over the world.
