The Kursk NPP-2: a new motor road bridge worth 1.2 billion rubles is opened in Kurchatov city

On August 9, 2016, a grand opening of a new motor road bridge required for the Kursk NPP-2 construction took place in the city of Kurchatov (the Kursk region).

The costs of the new bridge over the Seym river have exceeded 1.2 billion rubles. The facility is designed to cater for seamless delivery of construction materials and heavy loads into the substitution station. The main structural element erection started back in July 2014 and was completed within a groundbreaking time line in August 2016, which is 9 months earlier than planned (the OAO Transugstroy acted as the property developer, while the OOO Mosty I Tunneli was the subcontractor).
This facility has been the first one completed out of the 163 ones in the Kursk NPP-2 launch area. The bridge is a reinforced concrete structure made of 12 bays resting on 13 arms, those being 386 meters long and 14.3 meters wide.

On August 9, the bridge was officially put into service and transferred from NIAEP, the general contractor, to the Rosenergoatom Concern, the general customer. Alexandr Mikhailov, the Kursk region governor, and Andrey Petrov, the Rosenergoatom Concern CEO, participated in the formal occasion. Together with Viacheslav Fedyukin, the Kursk NPP director, and Igor Kruuz, the Kursk NPP-2 construction project director, they cut the ribbon as a part of the solemn opening. Afterwards, a dump truck, a crane truck, and a passenger bus took a ride over the bridge.

“The bridge’s capacity is 670 tons. That said, it can handle absolutely any equipment needed to construct the power block”, said Viacheslav Fedyukin, the Kursk NPP director, during the grand opening. “The logistics system introduced for equipment and inner materials transportation to the construction area has now come to life”.

This bridge is a very important amenity for the city of Kurchatov and the Kurchatov district, as it connects the left and the right banks of the Seym river. Previously, the transport had to use the Kursk NPP’s drain tunnel. Thus, a quarter of the Kurchatov district population, which is around 5 thousand people, can take advantage of a reliable construction for public and private transportation.

After the tremendous opening ceremony, the top management has gathered for a meeting to discussed different aspects of the Kursk NPP-2 construction and regional infrastructure development. “The Kursk NPP advancement means a lot for us”, said Alexandr Mikhailov, the Kursk region governor. “The new power blocks will facilitate stable electric power supply for the neigbouring regions for the next 60 years, while the new bridge will help us develop the Kursk region highway network”.
“The second stage of the Kursk NPP construction is a crucial project for Rosenergoatom”, said Andrey Petrov. “During these meetings, we can see that the resources the Concern allocates are taken care of, and the works are carried out properly. And the fact that this bridge was opened is a good evidence for it. I’m sure the Kursk NPP-2 will be finalized timely and up to par”.

At the end of the meetings, the Kursk region administration, the Rosenergoatom Concern and AO AtomEnergoSbyt have signed a trilateral agreement on cooperation in the area of electric power production, which presupposes introduction of a single processing center, a single call center, and bringing in advanced technologies.

The main goal of the document is to implement a stable system for retail electric power payments in the Kursk region, improve the consumers’ payment discipline, make the energy infrastructure more affordable, thus making the Kursk region more attractive for potential investors, and to foster the quality of the services rendered. This agreement will result in more advantageous organizational and economic conditions for further power industry development in the Kursk region.

At the moment, the Kursk NPP’s 1st, 2nd, and 4th power blocks operate at the capabilities set by the dispatch schedule. The 3rd power block is undergoing a scheduled overhaul.

The radiation background at the Kursk NPP and the area around it is within the normal power blocks’ operational limits and does not exceed the natural background.

The Kursk NPP, as part of the "Rosenergoatom Concern", is included into the electricity division of the State Corporation "Rosatom". The station is located 40 km south-west of the city Kursk on the left bank of Seym. The NPP has four operating units with RBMK RBMK-1000 reactors with total capacity of 4 million KW of electricity. Power units were connected to the unified energy system of the country in 1976, 1979, 1983 and 1985.

The Kursk NPP is the biggest electric power generation source in the Central Russian Black Mould. It accounts for over 50% of the total capacity of all Black Mould’s electric power stations.
