The Kursk NPP-2: Rostechnadzor has licensed construction

On May 31, 2016, the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Atomic Supervision (Rostechnadzor) has issued a license for the Kursk NPP-2 construction. Once the license is confirmed at the Rosatom State Corporation, the soil replacement activities at the replacement station construction site will start at the ditch.

The news was communicated during the 31st briefing on the Kursk NPP-2 construction. The representatives of the customer, the designer, the general contractor, and the subcontractors have visited the construction ground and have discussed the current status, the up-to-date issues and the ways to address those.

Since early this year, the budget of 694.3 million rubles has been used for the replacement station construction.

In May, general construction complex (armor-clad metal blocks workshop, shot-blasting workshop, pre-assembly open area) was taken care of, along with waste treatment and water abstraction facilities. Besides, the construction base territory was formed using hydraulic fill.

At the moment, 13 contracting companies work at 24 facilities of the Kursk NPP-2, with 465 employees being involved. The general contractor and contracting companies have been ordered to increase the number of personnel up to 790 by June,
The management has also requested to make up for the delays in May.

The Kursk NPP-2 is a replacement station for the currently operating Kursk nuclear power plant’s power blocks taken out of service. Pursuant to The Russian Federation energy land-use planning scheme valid until 2030 and approved by the Government of the Russian Federation in November 2013, the four NPP-2 replacement power blocks operating a new-generation VVER reactor will be located in the Kursk Region. The operational launch of the first two NPP-2 power blocks is planned to be synchronized with the running nuclear power stations’ power blocks taken out of service. The OJSC Concern Rosatom is the building owner and the technical customer for the project. JSC "NIAEP" acts as the general designer and the general contractor.

* VVER-TOI is a typical optimized and computerized two-block NPP project with a VVER-1300 (water-cooled power reactor), a further step in NPP-2006 project development.
