The Kursk NPP as part of "Rosenergoatom" is included in the electricity division of the State Corporation "Rosatom". The station is located 40 km south-west of the city of Kursk on the left bank of the Seym. At the NPP four power units with channel RBMK-1000 reactors with a total capacity of 4 million KW are operating. Power units were connected to the unified energy system of the country in 1976, 1979, 1983 and 1985. In the 1994-2009 period all existing power units have had deep technical modernization. The Kursk NPP is the largest in the Central Russian Chernozem power generating source. Win of the Kursk NPP in installed capacity of all power plants Chernozemya exceeds 50%.

The Kursk NPP-2 is a station, which will help to replace the retiring power units of the Kursk NPP from service since 2021.

The scheme of territorial planning of the Russian Federation in the field of energy up to 2030, approved by the Government of the Russian Federation in November 2013, provides accommodation in Kursk region of four power units of the replacement station NPP-2 with a new type of power reactos VVER-TOI.

VVER-TOI (standard optimized and computerized unit VVER technology) meets the current domestic and international safety requirements, has a longer service life and greater installed capacity, comparing with existing nuclear power plant reactors.

Commissioning of the first two nuclear power units is planned to be synchronized with the decommissioning of the reactors 1 and 2, operating at the nuclear power plant.
