The Kolsk NPP: the IAEA international experts have started another OSART mission

On June 20, 2016, the IAEA expert delegation has started another OSART mission at the Kolsk NPP. The goal of their visit is to examine the way the company implements the international team’s recommendations and suggestions received in November 2014.

“The IAEA team’s visit aims at further improvement of the way the nuclear power plant is being operated. Since the last OSART mission we have done a lot to make our station more secure, and we hope for positive outcomes of the examination”, said Vasiliy Omelchuk, the Kolsk NPP director.

The international team of experts visiting the station consists of the OSART mission lead Veselina Rangelova (Bulgaria), her deputy Fuming Tsian (China), and a representative of the European Commission Pierre Cocerolce (Belgium).

In November 2014, the OSART mission to the Kolsk NPP covered 9 aspects of the station’s operations. Based on the outcomes of the mission, the NPP received a top mark on the safety level the station has reached. Besides, the mission noted several positive practices used at other nuclear power vendors. All in all, the experts have stated that the Kolsk NPP’s management constantly works on operational safety and reliability of the station.

The new IAES OSART mission will last until June 24th.

* An OSART mission can be organized only by a request from a relevant IAEA member state and aims at revising the aspects related to operational safety. The IAEA OSART program fosters knowledge and experience sharing between nuclear power companies all over the world. This consultative help and support is used to promote nuclear safety in all countries operating NPPs.

The Kolsk NPP is an affiliate of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC and is based 200 km to the south from the city of Murmansk, at the Imandra lakeside. The plant produces around 60% of the Murmansk Region electric power. It has 4 operational power blocks with VVER-type reactors, each of them having capacity of 440 megawatt. The Kolsk NPP supplies electric power to the Murmansk Region and Karelia.
