The Kalinin NPP: the IAEA representatives have discussed the issues of handling spent nuclear fuel

On August 2, a technical tour of the International school of spent nuclear fuel handling representatives took place at the Kalinin NPP. The key topic of discussion was handling spent nuclear fuel in the countries intending to develop their nuclear power industry.

The technical tour became a part of the annual training program organized jointly by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Rosatom state atomic energy corporation. The specialists of AO TVEL, FGUP GHK, the Scientific and Engineering Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, AO Atomproject, AO NIAEP, AO SHK, TENEX, the Mayak Production Association, AO FCYaRB, AO NIKIMIT-Atomstroy, AO Bochvar VNIINM, JSC Atomstroyexport, the Rosatom Central Institute For Continuing Education And Training, and the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety took part in the event.

The aim of the guests was to study the spent nuclear fuel handling system adopted at the Kalinin NPP. Young professionals and the top management of the Rosatom companies and the partners from different countries involved in the topic have visited the Kalinin NPP construction site, the first line and the 4th power block’s machine halls, the main control room, have seen the TK-13 safe spent nuclear fuel transportation containers and the newly designed TUK-141O container.

During the round table organized at the Kalinin NPP Public relations center, the participants have discussed the Rosatom Corporation’s approaches and positions on spent nuclear fuel handling in Russia, the IAEA activity in this area, the way spent nuclear fuel is handled in Argentine, etc.

“We really enjoyed out stay at the Kalinin NPP. We have received detailed explanations of all processes we were interested in. On my own behalf and on behalf of the IAEA, I would like to thank the Kalinin NPP for the technical tour you have organized for us”, said Arthuro Bevilakva (Argentine), the IAEA representative.

The International school of spent nuclear fuel handling classes gather employees of nuclear power plants and scientists from relevant institutes from both Russia and the whole world. For a period of one week, young nuclear power experts listen to the Rosatom and the IAEA experts’ reports, take part in the classes organized by leading experts and trainers working at the major atomic power institutes and companies, and practice their system analytical skills when evaluating various situations in the area of spent nuclear fuel handling. The program also caters for international experience exchange and expert discussions; practical trainings using an ATEK modelling set and technical tours to Russian nuclear power plants.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
