The Kalinin NPP: On July 30, the 2nd power block will be stopped for scheduled maintenance under the industrial operational prolongation program

On July 30, 2015, the Kalinin NPP 2nd power block will be stopped for scheduled maintenance, which is to last for 90 days. During this period, a number of preventive maintenance and future development works are planned as a part of the industrial program on prolonging the Kalinin NPP 2nd power block’s operations.

In particular, some of the equipment critical for improved security and reliability of the power block is to be replaced, such as the reactor control and protection system electric equipment, the automatic neutron flux control equipment, the turbine condenser, with the power block’s third security system to be fully updated.

The works are to be covered by the repair and technical maintenance staff of the NPP and the contracting organizations. Job safety will be the priority during the maintenance phase.

As a result, upon completion of the project, the Kalinin NPP 2nd power block’s operational period, which was initially designed to expire in November 2016, will be prolonged.

Thanks to those works, the power block will become compliant with all up-to-date requirements and standards in the area of nuclear power usage, and will be able to operate safely and reliably for many years to come.

At the moment, there are three power blocks running at the Kalinin NPP. Maintenance and repair activities are under way at the 3rd power block. The radiation background in the area next to the MPP complies with the standards of normal power blocks’ operations and does not exceed the natural background.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
