The Kalinin NPP: Fennovoima, a Finnish project company, explores the best practices in NPP staff training

On September 25-28th, 2016, the representatives of Fennovoima, the customer and the owner of the Hanhikivi-1 NPP constructed based on Russian technologies, have visited the Kalinin NPP.

The main goal of their program was to explore the Russian best practices in training staff for a nuclear power plant.
“The Hanhikivi-1 nuclear power plant will be built in Finland. At the moment, we are at the technical design stage. The construction is to start in 2018”, said Eya Salo, Fennovoima’s human resources director. “At the moment, we are working with RAOS Project Oy (which is a part of the Rosatom State Corporation – note), the general supplier of the Hanhikivi-1 NPP. We elaborate a common plan for training the experts to operate our nuclear power plant. That’s why it is very important for us to see how our Russian colleagues organize the curriculum and what kind of simulators you use”.

The single-block Hanhikivi-1 NPP is to be constructed based on a Russian project with a VVER-1200 reactor in the Finnish province of Northern Ostrobothnia. The Leningrad NPP-2 is a referent one for the Hanhikivi-1 NPP. According to Juhani Jokinen, the Fennovoima’s production director, that’s where the representative of his company will continue familiarizing themselves with the Russian best practices in training NPP staff. “We are currently laying the ground for the Hanhikivi NPP staff training, and it is very important for us to adopt your expertise. We would like to also see common grounds and differences between our countries in this aspect. The Kalinin NPP has given us lots of interesting insights”, he added.

During the trip, the Finnish guests also visited the Kalinin NPP’s production site, its training department, Public information center, and the gymnasium No.3 that has recently established a “Nuclear class” for senior high school students interested in subject-oriented instruction.

RAOS Project Oy is an affiliate company of Rusatom Energo International (a part of the Rosatom State Corporation’s international group). It was registered in Finland in April 2015. Since summer 2015, it has all contractual rights and obligations of the Hanhikivi-1 NPP’s general supplier. The plant’s construction ground is undergoing preparatory activities.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
