The French nuclear power experts use the Novovoronezh NPP’s experience when constructing their own 3+ power block.

The representatives of the French power generating company Electricite de France (EDF) have stated that they are going to take into account their Russian colleagues’ experience during the construction and launch of the 3rd power block at the Flamanville NPP.

- The only thing we can do is to congratulate our associates at Rosenergoatom! – said Noel Camarcat, the EFD’s director on new projects engineering, during his visited to the Novovoronezh NPP on May 13. – They have done their job perfectly, demonstrating their professionalism. All the facilities of the 6th power block we have visited are really impressive. They take advantage of multiple know-hows elaborated in Russia.

Mr. Camarcat has noted his special interest in the intellectual project management environment Multi-D that helps optimize the power block construction resources before the erection process starts based on a 3D model of its components.
- We also plan to utilize this technology at the 3rd power block of the Flamanville NPP, - said the guest.

Noel Camarcat has visited the Novovoronezh NPP as a part of a peer learning process being on a delegation headed by Dominique Miniere, the senior vice-president on NPPs and combined heat and power plants operation at Electricite de France. A visit to the 6th power block of the station was a logical extension to the cooperation agreement Rosenergoatom and EDF have signed on April 21st.

- The cooperation between Rosenergoatom and Electricite de France covers multiple aspects: research and development collaboration, common activities on power blocks construction, modernization and shutdown experiences’ exchange, and much more, - said Andrey Petrov, CEO at Rosenergoatom. – The Novovoronezh NPP’s 6th power block is a great example to demonstrate the ways and the tools we use for construction and pre-commissioning activities at the 3+ generation blocks.

The 3+ generation power blocks boast high security standards and cost efficiency. Russia, the USA, and France compete to become the first nation to launch such facility. The American Westinghouse company has certified the AR-1000 project at the end of 2005 and is now constructing 4 blocks in the USA based on this design. However, the Novovoronezh NPP specialists were the first ones to complete core fueling of a 3+ reactor block.

The French delegation has expressed their common opinion saying that Russia shows incredible results constructing 3+ generation blocks and leaves France behind.

Novovoronezh NPP reactor unit No.6 is a standard new-generation 3+ Russian NPP project with the advanced technical and economic parameters. It was constructed based on the NPP-2006 design with the VVER-1200 reactor unit. The project takes advantage of the decades-long experience in secure and accident-free NPP operation with VVER reactor units. The contemporary design incorporates the requirements towards the scientific and technical documentation in Russia and IAEA recommendations.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1979. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The new innovative power units with capacity 1200 MW have been constructed at the construction site of the Novovoronezh NPP since 2007.
