Smolensk NPP: Region Governor Takes Stand in Favor of Construction of Smolensk II

On September 8, 2012 Governor of the Smolensk region, Alexey Ostrovsky, went to Smolensk NPP with a working trip. For the first time he visited the leading energy company of the Smolensk region, which was the largest taxpayer of the regional budget.

“For 21 years of my working life, I visited a lot of regions in Russia and abroad,” said Alexey Ostrovsky. “But I’m at the nuclear power plant for the first time. Of course, this is amazing. Being at the operating power unit, you understand what the power of the Russian state is, which, in particular, becomes possible thanks to such powerful plants.”

At the meeting with Director of Smolensk NPP, Andrey Petrov, the head of the region discussed various aspects of activities of the nuclear power plant, prospects for further development and implemented socially relevant projects and programs.

“I have told to the governor about the results of that reconstruction, which was done for the completion of the investment project to extend the life of the first power unit,” noted the director of Smolensk NPP. “In addition, we have discussed the question on the substitutional plant Smolensk II, the construction of which is scheduled at 6 km from Desnogorsk. The governor takes stand in favor of the construction.

Alexey Ostrovsky realizes that the welfare of Desnogorsk depends on the local economic mainstay, its production activities, social programs aimed at improving health, cultural and physical development of the city residents, support for education and improvement of areas.

“In general Desnogorsk is one of the “business cards” with the serious potential of the Smolensk region,” stressed the governor. “I know what huge social responsibility the nuclear power plant has.”

The head links further development of Desnogorsk and the region with the construction of power units of the substitutional plant. He is sure that the construction of Smolensk II is a huge prospect for the development of the region: the creation of new jobs, growth points, new tax revenues, business opportunities, and investment and commercial projects.

“That’s why I will ask the country’s top leadership to give approval for the construction of Smolensk II. I have already signed the letter to Rosenergoatom Concern that the region is extremely interested in this construction,” said the governor.

“There is a ready platform, ready comfortable city for living, highly skilled professionals and an energy institute near. All this is a very important argument in favor of building of new units here.”

Smolensk NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. Annually SNPP provides the country power system at an average of about 20 billion kWh of electrical power, which makes about 13% of energy produced by Rosenergoatom Concern and more than 80% produced by the power enterprises of the Smolensk Region.
