Smolensk NPP has passed the special-purpose inspection of its safety status

On April 6, 2012 the committee of the General Inspectorate of Rosatom State Corporation summed up the special-purpose inspection of the safety status of Smolensk NPP in spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste treatment (SNF and RAW).

The members of the committee were experts of Rosatom State Corporation and Rosenergoatom Concern, heads and representatives of Smolensk NPP divisions chaired by Vladimir Fedin, a General Inspector of Rosatom State Corporation.

During the inspection the experts got acquainted with the activity and plans of the plant for ensuring safety of the power units and policy in the field of SNF and RAW treatment. The committee studied materials, made rounds and checks of production units, workrooms, viewed the organizational and administrative, and operational documentation.

According to the results of the inspection, it was concluded that Smolensk NPP ensures nuclear safety in SNF treatment in accordance with the RF legislation, regulations and rules established by the supervising authorities.  The front office of the nuclear power plant defined the Policy for radioactive waste management, responsibility and authority of officials in providing safety. The Smolensk NPP staff, employed in the SNF and RAW treatment, is highly qualified.

The committee assessed the activity of Smolensk NPP in ensuring radiation safety in SNF and RAW treatment as conforming to the international standards. Based on the inspection results the Director of Smolensk NPP Andrey Petrov was handed the Act of SNPP activity assessment in SNF and RAW treatment.

Smolensk NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. Annually SNPP provides the country power system at an average of about 20 billion kWh of electrical power, which makes about 13% of energy produced by Rosenergoatom Concern and more than 80% produced by the power enterprises of the Smolensk Region.
