Smolensk NPP Holds Rally Timed to Day Commemorating Participants of Rectification of Consequences of Radiation Accidents and Catastrophes
On April 26 at the 26th anniversary of the Chernobyl NPP Accident, Desnogorsk held a rally dedicated to the Day Commemorating the Participants of Rectification of the Consequences of Radiation Accidents and Catastrophes.
This date is especially significant for Smolensk NPP and all the citizens of the nuclear scientists’ city. The Smolensk nuclear scientists were among the first who came to the rescue of Chernobyl NPP. About five hundred employees of Smolensk NPP in different years participated in rectification of the consequences of the disaster. Nowadays, most of them continue working at the nuclear power plant.
As the Head of Desnogorsk Administration Mikhail Khobotov noted, this year the April 26 is celebrated in a new format – as the Day Commemorating the Participants of Rectification of the Consequences of Radiation Accidents and Catastrophes. A corresponding law has been signed by the President of RF on April 4 of the current year.
- Today we not only honor the memory of the victims of radiation accidents and catastrophes, but also fete the living liquidators, - told Mikhail Alexandrovich. – We are deeply grateful to them for the performed feat.
The Chernobyl events taught a big lesson to the Russian nuclear power engineering. The existing standards in the field of safety have been revised cardinally, the reactor protection systems have been upgraded, and the staff professional integrity level has been raised sufficiently. Nowadays, the Russian nuclear power plants comply with the strictest international requirements in safety and reliability. High levels of safety of Smolensk NPP have been noted by the IAEA experts during the OSART Mission, which took place at the plant last year.
- Remembering the events at Chernobyl NPP and the Japanese tragedy, taking into account the mistakes of the past, we should move forward on the way of the development of the nuclear power engineering, as our future lies with it, - stressed in his speech the liquidator of the Chernobyl NPP Accident consequences, Shift Supervisor of the Smolensk nuclear power plant unit Gennadiy Malyar.
After a minute of silence, the rally participants laid flowers at the monument of the victims of radiation disasters.
Smolensk NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. Annually SNPP provides the country power system at an average of about 20 billion kWh of electrical power, which makes about 13% of energy produced by Rosenergoatom Concern and more than 80% produced by the power enterprises of the Smolensk Region.
