Russian atomists have paid the tribute to the memory of the victims of Chernobyl NPP accident

Representatives of Rostov NPP management and staff took part in the meeting devoted to the 25th anniversary of the accident at Chernobyl nuclear plant.

The accident consequences liquidators, representatives of Rostov NPP, Volgodonsk administration and the City Duma, as well as the citizens gathered near the monument to the victims of Chernobyl accident. They paid the tribute to the accident victims by a minute of silence and laid flowers to the monument.

More than 20 thousand people from Rostov region and about 600 from Volgodonsk participated in the liquidation of Chernobyl accident consequences. Recollecting the events of those days, Chairman of Liquidator, Volgodonsk City Public Organization, Alexander Fomin said: “Our citizens were doing their best. We do not feel shame while looking into our children’s eyes”.

Addressing the people, Rostov NPP Chief Engineer Andrey Salnikov noted, that atomists like no one else understood, how great a responsibility in the field of the provision of nuclear branch safety was laid over the shoulders of the nuclear plant employees: “Safety is above all. Every atomist must wake up thinking what to do for the sake of safety today. Our greatest challenge is to exclude the possibility of the events like those happened 25 years ago in Chernobyl”.

Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The nuclear power plant is located on the bank of the Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13.5 km far from Volgodonsk city. The nuclear plant has two operating power units of VVER-1000-type reactors with installed capacity of 1000 MW. Power unit No. 1 was put into commercial operation in 2001, power unit No 2 – in December, 2010.
