Rostov NPP: the second stage of the contest “Nuclear Science and Engineering” has been over

The second regional stage of reports competition among the pupils of schools and profile educational establishments at the age of 14-18 was held within the framework of IV all Russian contest called “Nuclear Science and Engineering”.

The main aims of the contest were: revealing of gifted young people and involvement of the pupils into the study of the problems of nuclear power peaceful use, power saving, ecology and also rendering them support in professional education.

At the second stage the contest participants were to defense their reports. Priority branches of the development of nuclear industry and alternative power sources in Russia and in the world; technical characteristics of the reactors of different types; ecological problems, problems of power saving, radiation in everyday life and medicine and the mass media influence over the population’s attitude to nuclear power as well became the main topics of the research works.

The jury presented by Rostov NPP public information centre employees and the centre of nuclear power under the Chairmanship of SFU Physical Faculty Dean, professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematics Sciences Vyacheslav Malyshevsky estimated the contest participants’ works.

“The contests of the kind help to reveal smart and gifted children. I would be glad if some of the present conference participants entered the Physical department”, Vyacheslav Malyshevsky noted.

According to the jury unanimous opinion Vitaly Shapovalov (Volgodonsk city) took the first prize for his work “The Impact of Rostov NPP over Radiation Level” Polina Kotina (Taganrog city) took the second prize with her work “You, He, She and I are Making a Light Country!” (Taganrog city). The third prize was given to Elena Andreyeva (Rostov-On-Don city), appeared with the report “Analyses of Public Opinion Concerning Rostov Nuclear Plant, reflected in Periodic Press of  Rostov-On-Don and Rostov region in 1990-2000”.

65 works of pupils from Rostov and Volgograd regions and Krasnodar Territory took part in the initial stage of the atomic contest. 46 research works were allowed to the next stage. The works of the second stage winners of the contest “Nuclear Science and Engineering” will fight for prizes at the “Junior” all Russian contest of pupils’ works (the contest web-site: http://junior-fair.org/).

Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The nuclear power plant is located on the bank of the Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13.5 km far from Volgodonsk city. The nuclear plant has two operating power units of VVER-1000-type reactors with installed capacity of 1000 MW. Power unit No. 1 was put into commercial operation in 2001, power unit No 2 – in December, 2010.
