Rostov NPP: Volgodonsk School Children Win Regional Round of Competition Nuclear Science and Technology

On April 20, 2012 the Information Centre for nuclear power in Rostov-on-Don awarded the creative projects competition finalists – children from 5 to 13 years old, and held research and practice conference of research works and reviews of 14-18 y.o. school students of the regional round of the All-Russian competition Nuclear Science and Technology.

In total the jury, consisting of Rostov scientists and teachers, received 180 works, 50 of them – the competition reviews, and 130 – the children’s creative projects. In the final of the regional competition there were allowed 12 reviews and 16 creative projects. Eight of them were the works of Volgodonsk school students.

In defense of their reviews in Rostov-on-Don, there were invited three Volgodonsk school students. As a result, Irina Shedko, a student of the Form 9 of the Grammar School 1 Yunona, according to the unanimous opinion of the jury has got the first prize for the work Measurement Analysis of Radionuclides Presence in Agricultural Products Produced in Radiation-Control Area of Rostov NPP, while Sergey Brazhko, a student of the 10th form of the Lyceum 11, won the 2nd prize with the review Actual Problems of Safe Operation of Nuclear Power Plants.

Also in the nomination For the Distinct Disclosure of the Nuclear Power Use Subject, there was noted a work of Yevgeniya Afonina, a student of the Form 10 of the Grammar School 1 Yunona.

In the competition of creative projects of children from 5 to 13 years old, the Volgodonsk citizens also showed good results. Oleg Chakilev, a 12 y.o. school student, won the second prize with his work Nuclear Power Plants Are More Environmentally Compatible than Thermal Power Plants. In the City where I’d Like to Live and Work nomination, Marina Miroshnichenko has become a winner for the creative project Achievements of Nuclear Science and Technology – to the Native City; and in the nomination For the Distinct Disclosure of the Subject the best was Sofya Antonkina.

The winners will take part in the third round of the All-Russian competition of review, research and creative works Nuclear Science and Technology, which will be held in Moscow.

Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The enterprise is situated on the bank of Tsimlyansk Reservoir at 13,5 km from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates two power units with VVER-1000 reactors with the capacity of 1000 MW. The Power Units 3 and 4 are nowadays under construction.
